A first campout should be comfortable and simple. Start with weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe shoes, a sleeping bag or blankets, a water bottle, a flashlight or headlamp, personal medication, and basic toiletries.
Borrow or delay big purchases when possible. Families often learn what they actually need after one or two outings, especially for tents, sleeping pads, cookware, and backpacks.
Label personal gear and pack so the scout can find their own items. For Troop 45, scouts should gradually learn to pack and carry their own gear; for Pack 145, adults should plan to help younger scouts.
Pack families may support local costs through small fundraisers such as camp-card sales. Troop families can also participate in troop fundraisers that help cover some individual activity expenses.
Quick checklist
- Bring water, layers, rain protection, and a light source.
- Ask leaders before buying expensive camping equipment.
- Pack medications and health forms where adults can access them if needed.
